 Post subject: Trace Commission Number

My car did not have a commission plate when I bought it 40 years back. Is there any way to trace the commission number based on the engine number? I assume it was the original engine when I bought it. I have the original registration number from South Australia, but don't think that would be much help.

Neville, some time ago I wrote an article about this. In this day of computers it is possible to work from alternate points of entry to a commission number. Things like engine ,gearbox numbers can be useful. Talk to John Pike.

You should be able to trace the commission number from the Mulliners number which is stamped on one of the brass plates attached to the firewall. Talk to Pikey who should be able to help via the TR Register in the U.K.

Hi Neville,

I expect you have checked that your engine number is correct for your model/series car i.e. a you have a late 3A engine number in a late flat floor 3A, or vice versa.

The best you could then achieve is to maybe find out the commission number for the car that engine was originally installed in.

You can get the commission number with the engine number from British Motor Industry Heritage Trust in the UK they have all the original factory records and if its the original engine they will provide all the info for the vehicle as it left the factory.
The down side is you will have to pay them , i got the info on my car back in 2009 and i think it cost about $100.00.

According to the rego when I bought it in 76 the engine was TS27754E and the year 1960. Since it is a 3a with blue badge on the front apron, and flat floor behind the seat. suppose that would be about right. Not sure I am curious enough to pay out over $100 to find out the commission number.

Neville, the flat floors started with TS60001. The first car for 1960 was TS65124 which indicates that your engine is from an earlier car, like 1958. Have you located your transmission and differential numbers? They tend to last better than engines. Find them and talk to John Pike and I am sure he will be of great help. The original commission numbers were often, but not always stamped on the body but you need to know where to look. Hope this helps.

Tricky. The transmission number is stamped on the LH side of the gearbox. There is a flat protruding area with rounded corners. The number is stamped on the top flange of the protrusion. The rear axle number is stamped on the upper rim of the flange to which the rear cover plate is attached. Obviously Triumph did not want people to readily access these numbers so it's out with a torch and an inspection mirror. The numbers should be roughly between 65000 and 82000. Good luck.
