I had the plugs out so thought I would put the compression gauge to work. The engine has 86mm liners and a stock TR4 head (so Darcie Reynolds told me when I got it from the Register 20 years ago). The car has done about 50000 miles since I put new rings in it.
I had all the plugs out and after a few seconds cranking the compression got as high as it was going to. I had 180 on 1, 2 and 3 and 190 on 4.
I expected to see about 160 psi. Is 180/190 a high reading?

Thanks Viv.
I just measured the head and it appears to be very very close to 3.33" so it hasn't been shaved as such, probably skimmed a few times over the years.
The engine was hot, carby butterflies closed, all plugs out and I cranked until the compression stabilised, about 3-5 seconds.
I haven't used the compression gauge for years, maybe it is out.
It appears the compression is good even if I didn't use the correct procedure.
